The crab is made of a hard plastic, very durable. All the edges are round and the toy is sturdy. There are so many sounds - I'm sure we have not heard them all yet. It has three different modes. If our 2 yo granddaughter is playing alone, she uses the mode to insert balls into the top and watch them shoot out
• and then chase the balls. It spins around and plays music. The two other modes are ones that we need to do with her - counting, following direction. When done correctly, the crab applauds! The sounds, music and lights are attractive to the kids. The crab moves all around - but works best on hardwood or vinyl flooring
• does ok on a very low pile carpet. Won't move around well on regular carpeting. Balls will be shooting all over the place, but we make it fun to chase the balls and get them inserted back into the top of the crab. The balls are hard plastic. The crab's motor is noticeably a little loud, but I think it bothers us and not the kids at all. This is a fun play toy, but also is good for hand coordination/motor skills and learning. We are very impressed with this toy and all it does. Because of the interactive and developmental elements, this counting crab toy will be used for a couple years. Ages listed are 12 mo+. I suppose a 12 mo would have fun with the balls and sounds of the crab. We haven't played the crab toy with anyone less than 18 mo (so far!). Requires 3 AA batteries (easy to install). Very good price for this quality.
