• 1 personal and 1 suitcase. The personal item was a soft sided 16x13x7 carry on like my mother and sister had which fit under “normal” airline seats. The other was as 18x14x8 hard sided suitcase that was well below the size for the overhead bins. Both purchased on Amazon and claiming they were allowed by various airlines including United and Air Canada as carry ons. The two United flights before Canada went fine. At the gate for Air Canada, one of their personnel said I could not have two pieces of luggage. I pointed to the sign saying otherwise. Another employee responded with just let her on. Leaving Lisbon our flight was delayed and the result was having to switch flights in the US to complete our trip. I had to take an economy seat though on the new flight, while my mother and sister took the last two premium seats. At the gate, I was told I was only allowed 1 carry on. Instead of debating it, I just pointed to my family members with premium seats and each with 1 carry on and said, one bag will be stored in the overhead bins by their seats. I was the lucky one having to carry all the extra stuff for our trip, thus 2 carry ons. We had decided we only needed one computer and my iPad was the chosen one to take. I also had the folder with all our paperwork for reservations, itinerary, etc..My sister was questioned each time I was about “her 2 carry ons,” but she was handling Mom’s since Mom is 89.” Air Canada still was not happy she had 2 even with that explanation. We will be avoiding Air Canada in the future!That trip was also a learning experience in that the space under some seats do not fit what used to be “normal” sized under seat carry on bags. Most middle seats now have something hard attached under the seat and many aisle seats have less space as well, though my sister did find that turning her 16x13x7 so the 16 side was sideways worked for the middle seat. As long as we had an airline seat without this restriction under the seat our soft sided carryons fit nicely.The way the airplanes are designed now with stuff under the middle seat and the space under many aisle seats smaller as well, the carry on size most airlines list now is 17x10x9 for the under seat item. Though ourAfter that experience, I decided I was going to change my luggage once again to make sure I would also clearly be within the acceptable limit if I’m called out again for having 2 pieces I’m carrying on.
