It has a main pocket and a divided smaller inner pocket, a zipped pocket on the flap, two outer snap-close pockets on the front (not shown in the picture as they're covered by the flap) and an open pocket on the body-side of the bag. It has a zipper around the main compartment which allows it to expand at least four extra inches. The snap-close pockets are big enough to fit a full-sized graphing calculator.My bag currently contains: a flat two-pocket school folder, a regular and five-subject notebook, two journals, a graphing calculator, a 2.5-inch wide metal lunchbox, heavy-duty earmuffs, and gallon ziploc bag full of hand sanitizer, perfume, Advil bottles etc. All this is just in the main compartment, and it's still zipped up. Remaining zipped, it still has room for a 1 3/4 inch textbook (over 1,000 pages).The two front pockets have: my wallet, cell phone, ipod, tissues, pens and pencils, four folded bus route maps, a mini slinky, earplugs in a small container, and a plastic tangle toy.The one downside is that, if the contents of your bag weighs more than about eight pounds (I used my scale), it's hard on your shoulder, but if you're wearing a jacket or sweater, that helps soft
